VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT THE COMIC OPERA THE MIKADO FEB. 21–22

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University music students will present W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s popular comic opera, The Mikado, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 in the Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.

Set in the Japanese town of Titipu, Nanki-Poo woos the beautiful maiden Yum-Yum in a story of hilarious musical and dramatic intrigue. First performed in London in 1885, The Mikado is enduringly popular with international audiences and is one of the most frequently performed musical theatre pieces in history.

The Mikado is happy and light entertainment that the audience will greatly enjoy,” said Viterbo theatre and music theatre department faculty member David Gardiner, who is directing the production. “It has lively and catchy music that will be very familiar to many people. It is very humorous, with witty lyrics and a funny plot and characters.”

Gardiner is joined by music department faculty member David Richardson, who is serving as the music director and conductor, and alumnus Joey Miller, who is the choreographer. Music department chair Dan Johnson-Wilmot is also providing assistance with the production.

“All Viterbo shows are really good, and The Mikado will be too,” Gardiner said. “The singers are excellent, and the production has wonderful choreography and many things to watch, such as the movement, dance, and action. And it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a good laugh. It’s very witty and humorous.”

This performance is part of Viterbo’s Bright Star season. Tickets are $23 for main floor, $20 for lower balcony, and $17 for upper balcony seating. For more information or to order tickets, contact the Viterbo box office at 608-796-3100 or visit www.viterbo.edu/tickets.
