Viterbo University Master of Science in Nursing program offers a 13 credit post-Master's certificate in the Nursing Leadership in Healthcare Track. This "cutting edge" program provides leadership development suitable for nurses in acute care, long term care, ambulatory, and /or community-based settings. Classes in program planning, human resource development, financial and systems management, as well as in selected issues in nursing leadership culminate in a practicum experience designed to meet students' career goals. Participants will be prepared to synthesize and apply leadership theories and behaviors to meet the complex healthcare needs of consumers and organizations and will be academically prepared to take the ANCC Nursing Administrative exam. The MSN program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Students must hold a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Additional admission information is noted on the Post-Master's application.
Coursework is primarily online using "Blackboard." A self-guided learning module is available for orientation to this method of course delivery. Two to four on-campus class periods per semester may be scheduled. Computer hardware, software, and sufficient computer literacy level are necessary (Microsoft Word, emails, attachments, use of Internet). PowerPoint skills are advisable. See the computer specification information. The American Psychological Association (APA), 5th edition, manuscript style is required for written work.
Completion can be accomplished in a three or four semester plan of study. Cost for this program is $485/cr for 2008-09.

Nursing 590 Healthcare Program Planning (3 cr)
Focuses on the process of needs assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of programs as a framework to meet the needs of a diverse and changing healthcare environment. Content is applicable to nurses in a variety of settings and advanced roles. Concepts of vulnerability, quality of life, and health are integrated.
Nursing 594 Systems Management (3 cr)
Multiple theories related to systems are utilized to understand organizational change within a healthcare environment. Issues related to organizational structure, culture, behavior, learning, and resources are explored. Concepts of caring, leadership, ethics, and diversity are integrated.
Nursing 596 Financial Management (3 cr)
Concepts and principles of finance and economics provide an understanding of the budgetary process and provide skills to develop and manage a budget for various nurse leadership roles. Issues related to financing, reimbursement, cost analysis and their impact on healthcare services are examined.
Nursing 598 Human Resource Development (2 cr)
Human, legal, and ethical issues related to the management, supervision, and development of personnel are examined. The course explores the influence of various factors on staff motivation, productivity, and satisfaction. The content examines the various roles nurse leaders have in this area.
Nursing 635 Experiences in Leadership (2 cr. Portfolio/Practicum/Seminar)
This course offers an individualized leadership practicum including the reflective examination of selected leadership issues to demonstrate application of leadership theories, behaviors, and professional development. Portfolio development combined with online didactic and/or independent
study/practicum experiences are utilized.
(NOTE: A portfolio validating acquisition of knowledge and skills congruent with course outcomes may be submitted for up to 100 practicum hours; 10 didactic hours are required.)
