Military Student Success

Viterbo University celebrates the contributions made by members of the armed forces and their families and we find it an honor that you are considering Viterbo to pursue your education. Whether you are a veteran who is transitioning from military service, still serving as a member of an active or reserve component, or you are a family member seeking to continue your education, the staff and faculty at Viterbo are here to ensure your success!

Viterbo offers undergraduate, degree completion, and graduate studies programs designed to meet the educational needs of military students. One of the core values at Viterbo is hospitality. Viterbo faculty and staff members are dedicated to coaching students to academic success. Viterbo’s commitment and gratitude to service men and women is reflected in the many student services provided.

The following provide specific assistance for military students and veterans:

Academic Resource Center

Viterbo’s military students have full access to learning and academic writing center services through the Academic Resource Center. Assistance with study skills, note taking, test taking, and writing skills are available during daytime hours or in the evening by appointment. Special accommodation services are available through the Academic Resource Center for students with disabilities. Meet with Ryan Russell to submit your documentation and arrange your accommodations: rjrussell@viterbo.edu, 608-796-3190, or 608-796-3194.

Advising and Career Development

Military students needing assistance in finding employment opportunities may work with the advising and career development office to address their specific needs. Students may also consider internship opportunities that provide a blend of work and learning experience. Staff members are available to assist with job searches, resume development, interview skills, and other services as needed. The career services office maintains connections with the VA representative for workforce development.

Counseling Referral Services

Viterbo's counseling services provides an excellent first point of contact for individuals who are struggling with their re-entry into school. This office has access to a broad range of community services available to provide the necessary support for military students seeking assistance. Students may visit the website to schedule an appointment with counseling services. A student can also stop in to the counseling services in Murphy Center, to make an appointment. Appointments are free for all students. Hours can be found on the website. Time is reserved each day from 9–10 a.m. and 3– p.m. for walk-in appointments on a first-come, first-served basis. These are not scheduled appointments or reserved appointments. Those who are in crisis will have immediate priority.

Campus Ministry

Fr. Conrad Targonski, OFM, university chaplain, serves as a special friend, confidant, and mentor to military-aligned students. Fr. Targonski served in the military, where he traveled with enlisted men and women to many parts of the world including deployments in war zone locales. He retired in September 2010 from the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps with a rank of captain, having served the Marine Corps for 22 years.
