Viterbo University offers a Middle School Endorsement Program for teachers who either teach at, or who are interested in teaching at the middle school level.

The holder of this endorsement will be authorized to teach all subjects in grades five through eight, with the exception of art, industrial arts, music, reading, physical education, and special education. Teachers who hold the general elementary endorsement (#10), issued prior to October 2, 1988, retain the broad grade levels and the authority of this new endorsement. For those interested in the Middle School Endorsement, please email, write, or call the Viterbo University Iowa Center.

Requirements to qualify for this endorsement are:

  • A current, valid Iowa teacher’s certificate with either the general elementary endorsement (102) or one of the subject area secondary level endorsements
  • Three semester hours of course work in middle school age child growth and development
  • Three semester hours of course work in middle school curriculum design and development
  • Six semester hours of course work in the social studies area, to include work in American history, world history, and geography
  • Six semester hours in mathematics, to include work in algebra
  • Six semester hours in science, to include work in biology and physical science
  • Six semester hours in language arts, to include work in grammar, composition, and speech

Note: For many teachers, the above requirements may be partially or fully met as part of the undergraduate program and if so, are not additional requirements.
