Curricular Clinical Training Model - Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling Program 


The table below provides an overview of the curricular clinical training model for this program that is built on the scientist-practitioner integrative approach that emphasizes trained mental health counselors and embraces a research orientation to maintain clinical relevance in their work. The courses outlined below will provide students with significant supervisory feedback to develop the counseling and research skills required for effective and ethical professional practice.

The coursework in the Clinical and Mental Health sequence provide students with exposure to foundational clinical skills while translating core knowledge areas to the conceptual and performance standards of effective counseling and research practice.

COUN 590: Models of Addiction Counseling  

COUN 630: Mental Health Leadership, Consultation, and Advocacy  

COUN 640: Psychodiagnostics and Treatment Planning  

COUN 660: Research, Evaluation, and Evidence-based Practices

Counseling Practicum seeks to enhance the skills and conceptualization processes acquired through counseling a variety of client populations with intense individual (one hour weekly) and group university supervision and guidance (three and one-half hours weekly).

The course also prepares trainees for the upcoming internship experience and development as independent professional counselors

COUN 690: Counseling Practicum

110 hours of indirect client contact]

Counseling internship is a field counseling experience supervised by a qualified mental health counseling professional.

The internship provides an opportunity for trainees to perform, under site supervision, a variety of counseling activities that a professional mental health counselor is expected to perform including action research.

Consistent with the science-practitioner model, trainees will be required to engage in research relevant to the site and their professional practice.
