FLUENCY MEASURES AND INSTRUCTION TO HELP STRUGGLING READERS
This course is designed to help teachers address the needs of students who are unable to read words quickly, automatically, and accurately enough to enable them to comprehend what they read. Fluency involves reading rate, accuracy, expression, and perseverance. When the National Reading Panel looked at reading research in education they found that fluency is a key aspect of reading instruction that is often overlooked in instruction. This course will examine the research and provide hands-on ideas for fluency assessment (including assessment tools, benchmarks, screening, placement, and progress monitoring), and instructional strategies to promote fluency.

LITERACY COACHING PART I
This three-credit course is designed as an introductory course to prepare literacy coaches in three areas of essential knowledge: systems, literacy processes, and relationships. A Viterbo-trained literacy coach is a reading specialist who is trained to provide explicit professional development to teachers in a wide variety of situations. Coaching is educator-centered in that a coach uses demonstration, observation, and engaged conversations related to specific teacher beliefs and practices. Theoretically, within the constructivist view of teaching, the coach facilitates conversations with the educator within his/her “zone of proximal development.” The ultimate goal is learning for all students. Pre-requisite: Master’s Degree, 316, classroom teaching experience.
