Catalog Course Description:  Several topics applicable to the study of business are covered. In particular, the course covers systems of linear equations and linear programming, the mathematics of finance, probability theory, and an introduction to the elementary calculus topics. Emphasis in the course is on applications.  Prerequisite: acceptable score on placement exam, grade of C or higher in in  MATH 110.

General Course Objectives: This course is designed to cause the student to learn to apply basic mathematical theory to solve typical business problems.  Skills needed in FINA 331 and MGMT 447 are developed.

Prerequisite: Acceptable placement score or C grade in Math 110. See me right away if you have a question about your math background as it relates to this requirement.

Content: Review of Basic Algebra

               Mathematics of Finance

               Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices

               Linear Inequalities and Linear Programming

               Probability (as time permits)

               Calculus – Derivatives

               Calculus – Integration  

Grading:  3  exams                                 300 pts.

                quizzes/homework                 100 pts.

                comprehensive final exam       100 pts.

            Note: Grades are based on points allocated above. No extra credit. Typically, 90%+ is A, 80%+ is B, 70%+ is C, and 60%+ is D.

            Note:  Quizzes are “open book, open notes”; exams are “closed book”. A sheet of notes and calculator are usually allowed for exams.

            Note: All tests taken in regular classroom at scheduled times. No exams taken in learning center unless diagnosed learning disability exists (verified by Mr. Wojeichowski in writing).

            Note: Final exam must be taken at regularly scheduled time unless approved in writing by the Dean.

Attendance: Required.  Guidelines followed are those found in Viterbo University catalog.  A valid verifiable excuse must be presented in order to make up missed exams or quizzes.  “I overslept”, “My ride is leaving early for vacation/ the weekend/ etc.”, “I had a busy week and didn’t have time to study” are examples of NON-valid excuses. Make-up exams for valid excused absences must be done in a timely manner, usually within one week of return.

Calculating Equipment: Hand-held calculators are permitted for quizzes and exams.

Cheating: First offense - zero credit on pertinent work; second offense - failure in the course. For more, see Academic Honesty Policy in the Viterbo University Student Handbook.

Approximate Schedule:    Weeks 1-3:      Chapters 1,2, and 3.  Exam 1.

                                        Weeks 4-7:     Chapters 4,5, and 6.  Exam 2.

                                        Weeks 8-11:   Chapters 9 and 10.  Exam 3.

                                        Week  12-14:  Chapter 11 and review.

                                        Final Exam Week: Comprehensive Final Exam.
