-TIME...Approximately 8 hours a week outside of class is needed for this course. Plan your schedule accordingly.
LearningCenter(LC):
The LC is a place for students to work, read, study, meet with tutors and/or study groups. It’s also the place on campus to find many necessary forms and information. When you have a question regarding anything related to your program at Viterbo and you don’t know whom to ask, the front desk of the LC is a good place to start. All services provided by the Learning Center, including tutoring, are free to all part-time and full-time Viterbo students.

Drop-in Math Homework Help:
The math specialist or a math tutor is available for drop-in homework help for all math courses. No appointment necessary. Just drop in to the Learning Center.

Tutoring
Many students benefit from working with a tutor for this course. To sign up for a tutor, go to the LC and request tutoring. A tutor will be assigned to meet with you within a week. Tutoring sessions begin the second week of classes, but you may sign up for tutoring anytime during the semester. Sister Helen Koopman or other students.
ModuMath Lab
Much of your out of class homework and testing will be done in the ModuMath Lab, located in MC312. There are eight terminals and over 100 students using the program. Signing up for a machine in the ModuMath Lab binder is required.
Grading:
In order to complete the course, you will need to test out of required lessons on the ModuMath machines. This will be done in the ModuMath Lab. The machine will keep track of your progress and your scores. It advantageous to study the lesson discs before attempting the tests since there is a 5-point penalty each time you attempt and fail to demonstrate competency.
Your final course grade will be determined using the following weights:
30% ModuMath Lab Scores (25%Algebra/5%Arithmetic)
60% In-Class Tests and Quizzes and Out-of-Class Homework
10% Final Cumulative Exam
The following will be used to determine your letter grade:
A 93-100 C 70-75
AB 88-92 CD 64-69
B 82-87 D 60-63
BC 76-81 F below 60
*A grade of a C or higher must be earned to take any other math courses at Viterbo.

Attendance
For more on the College Attendance Policy see page 36-37 of the 2001-2003 College Catalog. The following is the attendance policy for Math 001-Introductory Algebra.
Attending every class period is expected. The only time a student is not considered absent from class is when the student attends a extracurricular activity, such as a field trip; or when the student is representing Viterbo at an officially scheduled activity, such as a fine arts production, a conference, or an intercollegiate athletic event. When this occurs, you need to inform me one day ahead of time. Come to Murphy Center 312 to pick up materials.
Illness, funerals, job interviews, etc. occurring during class meeting time may be unavoidable during the semester. They are, however, considered absences. If you know ahead of time that you have to be gone, it is appreciated if you let me know. Three absences a semester may occur without any grade penalty. On the fourth absence, a student’s final course grade will be lowered one-half grade and a half grade for every two absences thereafter. Please be aware of how absenteeism can affect your course grade:

*A grade of a C or higher in Math 001 is the prerequisite for all other math courses at Viterbo.
**After the 9th absence (15% of the class meeting time), a failing grade (F) will automatically be issued.
Make-up Work
Tests-Missing a test without notifying the instructor ahead of time will result in a zero with the option of taking a similar test at a later date and receiving half of the points. In the case of illness or unusual circumstances, rescheduling of tests for full credit may be granted if the instructor is contacted in person or by phone before the test is given in class.
Quizzes-No makeups on announced or unannounced quizzes. Missing class on the day a quiz is given will result in a grade of zero.
Homework-Homework turned in late will receive credit with a penalty in points for tardiness.
