About the Program
You are about to read information about one of the most outstanding administrator preparation programs in Iowa. This two-year, six semester program requires an internship during each of the six semesters. The internship is conducted onsite with an approved mentor, which is usually the student’s principal. Ten rigorous, scaffolded courses meet the standards set by the State of Iowa Department of Education administrator preparation approved program as well as the high standards set by both the Iowa Center and the University.
Each of our instructors is either a current or recently retired principal who brings a wealth of experiences to each course. They design assignments, activities, and readings that address the Iowa Standards for School Leaders (ISSL) in a meaningful and practical manner. Focused topical speakers supplement the course as well.
There are two tracks for this program; 1) the initial master’s degree or 2) the licensure-only track for those individuals who already possess a master’s degree. The Program allows a maximum of nine equivalent transfer credits which are reviewed on an individual case-by-case basis. Each of these tracks culminates in a PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education license.
During the student’s final or sixth semester in the program, the student presents an electronic portfolio to a team of evaluators addressing the six standards of the Iowa Standards for School Leaders. This presentation provides the students the ability to demonstrate to the administrative team the content learned as well as the internship experiences received throughout the program.

TESTAMONIALS
“I feel fortunate that I experienced the rigorous standards of the Viterbo Educational Leadership Program. Other graduate programs may not have given me such diverse internship and classroom opportunities, which would have left me ill-prepared for my current position. Once again I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunities and experiences I had through the Viterbo program.” (KF)
