  • Start term: Summer 2024
  • End term: Spring 2025 [Courses/Internship ends Mid-May 2024.]
  • English Language Learner (ELL) curriculum.
  • There will be six classes.
  • Each class is three credit hours.
  • 18 credits total.
Course titles, credit hours, and typical completion plan by term are:
Culture and Language Acquisition 3 cr. Summer – online
Linguistics for ELL Teachers 3 cr. Fall – online
Elementary Strategies and Methods for EL Teachers 3 cr. Fall – partial online
Secondary Strategies and Methods for EL Teachers 3 cr. Spring – partial online
Assessment for ELL Teachers 3 cr. Spring – partial online
Internship for ELL Teachers 3 cr. Summer (district-based)

  • Some classes will be blended (partial online) and some will be 100% online. Typically, these courses are scheduled one at a time, e.g., one three-credit course the first eight weeks, then another three-credit course the next eight weeks of the term (spring, summer or fall terms).
  • The English Language Learner courses are designed by Iowa ELL experts. The intent was to develop coursework for ELL teachers as well as general education teachers who serve ELL students. Practical and authentic learning in these courses will empower all teachers to serve our ELL population. Policies, best practice, and state requirements will be important topics in the series of courses.
  • The series of ELL courses (18-credits) has been aligned with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE) requirements for Iowa Endorsement; however, Viterbo University does not award the Iowa Endorsement. At the end of the coursework, individual students will apply and pay a fee to the BoEE for analyzation of transcripts. The BoEE awards or "adds" Iowa Endorsements to Iowa Teaching/Administrative Licenses.
  • The per credit hour tuition rate for completion of all or part of the 18-credit slate of courses for the summer 2024 cohort is $245/credit. This is a highly discounted rate from our listed $430/credit for current academic year. These ELL courses are not financial aid eligible. First course tuition is due on or before the first day of class. Same for each subsequent class for the summer 2024 cohort students.
