In February 2011 a medical mission organized by Refuge International took place in San Raimundo (Guatemala) where some 40 volunteers from around the US provided medical care in this clinic

 A practicum was set up by Viterbo to provide hands-on experience for graduate nursing students as well as for a student in the Community Interpreting program.  Students are joined here by Bonnie Nesbitt and Julie Clements, faculty organizers, Joan Artman, wife of Viterbo President Richard Artman and a local Refuge coordinator.

 The Viterbo Community Interpreting student, Gregg Attleson, was one of eleven interpreters who worked with medical staff and patients to facilitate communications.

 A Maya family waits in the clinic to be called for consultation with a provider.  Patients sometimes traveled for hours to get to the clinic.


 
 Guatemala 06 
 Beside consultation, minor lab work and pharmaceuticals, members of the team provided over 40 surgeries.  Eight year old Wendy had a hernia operation.

 Julie Clements meets with a young mother and daughter for consultation.  In some cases conversations had to be interpreted in relay, from one of the Maya languages to Spanish and then from Spanish to English and back again.
