TERM DEFINITION
Adjusted Cohort The results of removing any allowable exclusions from a cohort.
Athlete Students who are on the institutional athlete rosters as of census date (the second Friday of the term) their first semester.
Cohort A specific group of students established for tracking purposes at the time of first enrollment.  For example, a F2009 cohort is the group of students who entered Viterbo as first-year students in the fall of 2009 and were enrolled in postsecondary education for the first time.
Exclusion Those students who are removed from a cohort, according to the guidelines set forth by the National Center for Education Statistics.  Students may be removed from a cohort if they left the institution for one of the following reasons: death or total and permanent disability; service in the Student Right-to-Know Act armed forces (including those called to active duty); service with a foreign aid service of the federal government, such as the Peace Corps; or service on official church missions.
Fifth-Semester Retention Rate The percentage of students who enrolled at Viterbo the fifth semester after the cohort began.  For students in traditional programs, fall and spring terms are counted.  For cohorts who begin in a fall term, the fifth semester is the fall term of the cohort's third year.
First Generation An individual neither of whose parents completed a baccalaureate degree as self reported in Viterbo's application or the FAFSA application.  "No Data" includes students who provided insufficient data along with those who provided no data.
Undeclared Students whose major was "Undeclared" their first term at Viterbo.
First-Time First-Year (FTFY) Undergraduate Cohort The group of students has no prior postsecondary experience (except as noted below) attending Viterbo for the first time at the undergraduate level.  It also includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term, and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits earned before graduation from high school).
Five-Year Graduation Rate The rate is calculated as the total number of students who completed a degree or certificate by the end of the summer term of their fifth year at Viterbo divided by the adjusted cohort.
Four-Year Graduation Rate The rate is calculated as the total number of students who completed a degree or certificate by the end of the summer term of their fourth year at Viterbo divided by the adjusted cohort.
High School Percentile For students whose high schools rank graduates, either they are in the top fiftieth percentile (above 0.5) or in the bottom fiftieth percentile (0.5 and below).  "No Data" includes students whose high schools did not provide ranking information.  The cut-off of the fiftieth percentile has been determined through analysis to be a risk factor for retention.
Low ACT Composite Score Students who have submitted ACT scores and whose composite score was 20 or below are in this category.  "No Data" includes students who did not submit ACT scores.  This category has been determined to be a risk factor for retention based on analyses.

Retention Rate A measure of the rate at which students persist in their education an institution, expressed as a percentage.  Students who graduate before the expected time to completion are counted as retained.
Seventh-Semester Retention Rate The percentage of students who enrolled at Viterbo the seventh semester after the cohort began.  For students in traditional programs, fall and spring terms are counted. For cohorts who begin in a fall term, the seventh semester is the fall term of the cohort's fourth year.

Third-Semester Retention Rate The percentage of students who enrolled at Viterbo the third semester after the cohort began.  For students in traditional programs, fall and spring terms are counted. For cohorts who begin in a fall term, the third semester is the fall term of the cohort's second year.
Transfer Cohort The group of students entering Viterbo for the first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate).
