The Middle School Endorsement is a program for teachers who teach, or who are interested in teaching, at the middle school level. A current, valid Iowa teachers' license with either the general elementary endorsement or one of the subject matter secondary level endorsements is required.
Note: The holder of a Middle School endorsement is authorized to teach in the two concentration areas in which the specific requirements have been completed (12 credits) as well as in other subject areas in grades five through eight which are not the core content areas. The holder is not authorized to teach art, industrial arts, music, reading, physical education and special education.
The Iowa Middle School Endorsement is for grade levels 5-8.
Requirements to qualify for this endorsement which became effective July 1, 2010, are:
1. A current, valid Iowa teachers' license with either the general elementary endorsement or one of the subject matter secondary level endorsements.

3. Required Coursework:
EDUC 517 Understanding the Young Adolescent (three credits)
EDUC 628 Models for Teaching Middle School Students (three credits)
EDUC 531 Adolescent Literacy (three credits)
EDUC 516 Field Experience (30 clock hours) (two credits)
Plus choose at least two of the following content areas:
#1821 -- Middle School Language Arts: 12 credit hours in language arts to include Composition, Language Usage, Speech, Young Adult Literature, Literature Across Cultures
#1822 -- Middle School Mathematics: 12 credit hours with Algebra included
#1823 -- Middle School Science: 12 credit hours including coursework in Life, Earth and Physical Scienc1823 -- Middle School Science: 12 credit hours including coursework in Life, Earth and Physical Scienc
#1824 -- Middle School Social Studies: 12 credit hours to include U.S. History, World History, Government, Geography
4. Upon completion of the program the student is required to complete a Special Recognition Award application. Please complete the form and send it to the program Coordinator. This form is needed for transcripts to reflect a new endorsement.
Note: Viterbo is currently offering courses for completion of the Language Arts content area. Graduate or undergraduate credits earned from another accredited college or university will be accepted to meet the content area credit requirements for social studies, math and science.
