Welcome to the Viterbo University Honors Program

Mission

The mission of the Viterbo University Honors Program is to provide a supportive, enriched learning environment responsive to the educational needs of highly able and exceptionally motivated undergraduate students who are committed to achieving academic excellence, in addition to developing their potential as ethical leaders and faithful servants.

Goals

The goals of the Honors Program are:

  • To develop a community of scholars.
  • To promote academic excellence within the Viterbo University community.
  • To provide opportunities for research and creative work involving both faculty and students.
  • To assist students in preparation for graduate and professional schools.
  • To help students develop servant leadership skills by providing them opportunities to work with service organizations both within and outside the University.

How does the Viterbo University Honors Program differ from other schools' Honors Programs?

The Viterbo University Honors Program seeks to encourage highly able and exceptionally motivated students to achieve academic excellence, but also to develop these students' servant leadership skills. What does it mean to be a servant leader? Based on the philosophy and practice first written about by Robert Greenleaf, "A servant-leader is one who chooses to serve, and serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first..." Rooted in the mission of Viterbo University, the Honors Program strives to help students develop the skills and desire to be faithful servants and ethical leaders. Students will be challenged and encouraged to work for the common good in the spirit of humility and joy.
