What can you do with an undergraduate degree in history?

History majors are afforded the opportunity to critically analyze the the major events that have shaped our world. But it also provides skills. Historians are skilled writers, researchers, and communicators. These skills provide advantages for a variety of career areas.  As reports have shown, students with history majors perform well in the job market. Take a look below to see some possibilities.

Information Manager

Because the practice of history is about managing documents and sources, it prepares students for the data-driven world. This often leads students to careers in archival work or library management. History majors sometimes go to graduate programs in library science, archives management, or museum studies. They also work in a variety of other document-driven fields, helping organize and maintain complex data flows.

One of the most common routes for history majors is into the field of education. If you choose this path, you will also need to take additional courses in other subjects or specialize in a narrowly defined field of history. With this training, you can begin a career in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools. Others end up in museums and historic sites.

History prepares students to 'argue' using evidence and critical analysis skills. This prepares students for a wide range of careers. While some of these careers, such as law, require graduate work, others do not.
