Helpful Services for International Students:

English as A Second Language (ESL)

Viterbo University recognizes that English language proficiency is an important component of academic success for international students whose native language is not English.  Students who do not meet the TOEFL requirements (500+ paper test, 173+ computer test, 61+ internet test) may enroll in one of Viterbo’s English as a Second Language courses. The ESL courses are designed to improve students’ experiences at Viterbo by enhancing their conversation, reading, writing, and listening skills, and overall academic performance. Some of the topics the courses will cover include:

  • Improve reading fluency             2013 Bluff Trip
  • Vocabulary
  • Paragraph and writing conventions
  • Academic skills in the classroom
  • Listening comprehension
  • Conversational proficiency
  • Comprehending lectures in English
  • Making oneself understood in class

The E.S.L. Policy can be found here.

Academic Resource Center

The Academic Resource Center offers individual and group tutoring for all classes offered at Viterbo, at no cost. Some additional services the ARC provides include math assistance, nursing math preparation, and writing assistance. Many workshops are held throughout the semester to help you be successful in all areas of your academic performance. The ARC has a Conversation Table designed for international students who need to improve their English conversation skills, as well as one-on-one advanced writing tutoring for graduate international students.  More information can be found at the ARC website: http://www.viterbo.edu/learningcenter/
