2009 Theme: Temperance
The 2009 conference is the third in a series of four conferences on the cardinal virtues. We invite papers examining the meaning, history, and practical implications of the idea of temperance as a virtue. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
Presentations may include the following topics:
Pleasure and Pain
Temperance and the Emotions
Economic Temperance
Ecology and Natural Limitation
Wants and Needs
Lust, Greed, & Self-Control
Self-Sufficiency & Dependence
Keynote Speakers
Richard White
Professor of Philosophy, Creighton University
Author of Radical Virtues: Moral Wisdom and the Ethics of Contemporary Life
Gregory Paul Johnson
Author of Put Your Life on a Diet: Lessons Learned from Living in 140 Square Feet
Presentation proposals should be no more than one-page in length and include name, affiliation, address, and e-mail address. Presentations will be limited to twenty minutes with ample time provided for discussion. Proposals for panel discussions and “works in progress” are encouraged.
Deadline for submissions is January 10, 2009.
