Fire, Smoke, or Explosions


  1. Pull fire alarm if not sounding. Call 911 and calmly provide your name, the building and ­location of fire, the nature of the emergency.
  2. Locate persons with disabilities/special needs and provide assistance and/or provide their ­location to emergency responders.
  3. Evacuate building using designated evacuation route or proceed to nearest exit. All emergency exits can be used.
  4. Do not use elevators and keep fire doors closed.
  5. If caught in smoke, drop to your knees and crawl to the closest safe exit. Breathe through nose. Cover it with a towel or shirt if possible.
  6. If trapped in a building, close all windows and doors. Place wet or dry cloth material ­under door to prevent smoke from entering. Attempt to signal people outside of the building. Call 911 to notify responders of your location and signal from window.
  7. Notify campus safety or fire department if you think someone is still in the building.

  8. Never reenter a building until given an okay by the fire department.
