Natural Gas

In 2010, Viterbo’s Dahl School of Business 4+1 MBA students collected baseline data for the years of 2008 and 2009.  In 2008, Viterbo University natural gas consumption totaled 12.24 trillion BTUs.  In 2009, total natural gas consumption decreased to 11.41 trillion BTUs.  If converted to the number of 100-ton railroad cars full of coal, the 2009 usage would total 5,705 railroad cars.

The greatest percentage of natural gas use in 2009 stems from athletic venues (37%).  On-campus housing accounted for another quarter (26%), while non-academic buildings accounted for almost two tenths (19%).  Academic buildings accounted for slightly less (15%).  The remaining usage occurred in academic buildings.
