Programs of Study
The English Department at Viterbo University offers six majors and five minor programs in literature, writing, literature/theatre arts, and teacher education, known as emphases within the major. Central to these programs is the intensive study of writing, language, and - especially - literature: one of the core humanities disciplines and the cornerstone of a liberal education. Two notable features of the Viterbo English program are Symposium, a year-long gathering of English majors and faculty; and Seminar, in which seniors write and publicly defend theses of original research.
Students choosing English as a major, second major, or minor will graduate from Viterbo well-prepared for a variety of professional careers requiring analytical reasoning and effective communication skills: teaching, at both the secondary and college/university level; law; journalism; editing; publishing; public relations; marketing. Study of English not only enhances crucial writing and thinking skills; it also offers students cultural enrichment and enjoyment that comes with reading great works of literature, by authors as diverse as Homer, Shakespeare, Melville, Chinua Achebe, and Alice Walker.
