DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION/PUPIL SERVICE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
EDUL 651 Legal Aspects of Special Education and Resources
Prerequisite: Admission to the Viterbo Director of Special Education/Pupil Service Program.
The focus of this course is to address the Federal-State Laws, regulations and policies dealing with special education programs and students. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the court cases which help set the presidents for programs across the United State and the State of Wisconsin. The course will address the different entitlement dollars that follow programming/students and there intended assistance.
EDUL 654 Exceptional/Diverse Learner Needs
Prerequisite: Admission to the Viterbo Director of Special Education/Pupil Service Program.
The focus of this course will be to gain an understanding of the criteria for each of the eleven categories to assist IEP team’s diagnosis if a child has a disability. The course will also explore an array of instructional, assessment, and intervention strategies to the assist the child. Assistive technology will be incorporated as well as the concept of Universal Design and conflict management will be discussed. A systemic analysis of district/building staffing, placement of programs and students will be part of the research utilized in the class.
EDUL 655 Pupil Services and Non-Discrimination
Prerequisite: Admission to the Viterbo Director of Special Education/Pupil Service Program.
The focus of this course will be the Role of Pupil Service in supporting safe and healthy schools. These positions will include school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and school nurses. Awareness of legal implications of student records, storage, confidentiality, and directory data will be understood along with mandatory attendance (Truancy Laws). Students will gain an understanding of Nondiscrimination (Section 504), “At Risk” and preventive/intervention as part of their professional responsibility.
EDUL 769 Director of Special Education/Pupil Service Practicum
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the three entry level classes; EDUL 651, 654, and 655.
This course involves field-base projects addressing each of the state administrator standards and content guidelines for the Director of Special Education/Pupil Service certification. The activities will be determined by the student and the assigned local mentor with input from the University Practicum Advisor. Evidence will be provided in the student portfolio, along with their reflections. To start the course the student will provide a prospectus (plan) of the kinds of activities and approximate number of hours spent on each activity and aligned standard. (150 hours)
Note: The above four classes (EDUL 651, 654, 655, and 769) or needed along with the Administrative License in order to receive the Director of Special Education/Pupil Service certification.
