The Environmental Responsibilities Committee and the Student Sustainability Club have planned events to celebrate Earth Day Tuesday, April 17.
Tuesday, April 17
- Farmers Market from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Reinhart Center lobby.
- Spirit of St. Francis Sustainability Awards Presentations at 11:30 a.m. in Reinhart Center 127. Following the award ceremony, La Crosse County Sustainable La Crosse Commission Mike Geise will speak about what La Crosse has done and is doing to reduce our carbon footprint.
In addition, insect hotels were built at the Viterbo Athletics Complex on April 14 as part the President’s Day of Service. Many insect species are experiencing reduction in habitat due to human impacts on the environment. Native insects are also competing with introduced species for resources such as pollen and nectar and nesting sites. The hotels provide additional habitat options for insects and other organisms. For example, solitary stingless bees build nests inside of small holes and require access to mud. Insect hotels can provide these valuable resources.
