Prior to coming to Viterbo, Cook was a consultant (specializing in project management and systems analysis and design) for several years—primarily for State of Wisconsin clients in Madison. Before that, she worked as a software engineer (specializing in database design and Web programming). At her workplaces she was also involved in recruitment and training. Currently, Cook nurtures her entrepreneurial spirit and creativity as a photographer and partner of a photography business (www.aproposphotography.com). She is also a certified leadership coach for The Leadership Circle.

Research Activities: As research coordinator for the MBA program, Cook continuously advises 25–50 graduate research projects. In the past few years, she has presented her own research, "The Impact of Sarbanes Oxley on Information Technology Professionals" and "The Use of Blogs as an Educational Tool in Graduate Business Courses"; has submitted for publication "Burnout of IT Workers: A mixed methodology investigation"; and has another working paper, "The lived experience of information technology workers with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance responsibilities". In the 2008–09 academic year, Cook was selected as a research fellow for the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership and is studying the role of hope and leadership in small nonprofit organizations.
