Program and Courses
The broad field social studies (BFSS) major requires coursework from history and social science courses.
All BFSS students are required to take
- survey courses in western or world civilizations and United States history
- upper division history classes, including Asia in the Modern World and electives in thematic or topical courses such as American Environmental History, Building a New Europe, or the History of Medicine
- various economics, political science, psychology, and sociology courses.
Options for BFSS students include study abroad or internships related to possible career choices (for example, public history and museum work).
It’s important to pay close attention to the catalog to assure that you stay on schedule for graduation. Consult your advisor with any questions or to keep him or her abreast of your progress. Don’t forget that your advisor is here to help keep you on track.
