Oktoberfest!

 Permanent link

Last week I got to participate in the Oktoberfest activities for the first time this year! and let me tell you, it was a BLAST!!

What is Oktoberfest?  Well heres what the website said about it:

In 1810, when Princess Therese was married to the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, the festival began as a wedding celebration. In a meadow adjacent to Munich, as part of the wedding entertainment, a horse race was staged for 40,000 enthusiasts from all over Bavaria. The purpose of the celebration was two-fold:
First, to give thanks to the Lord for the past years crops and other blessings.

Second, to share in the joy of the occasion with the family in the spirit of true love.

Such was the success of the party given after the wedding that the meadow was named the Theresien-Wiese in honor of the princess. Even today, the meadow retains its name and is kept as a large open clearing within the heart of a city grown far beyond it. Today, the festival comes alive at noon on opening when, as the clock of St. Paul's Church in Munich strikes 12 noon, the Burgermeister enters one of the beer tents and taps the first cask and quaffs the first stein during a 12 cannon salute. One of the highlights of the fest is the Trachtenfest parade, one in which thousands of participants from all over Germany dress in their native costume. Bands, floats and decorated beer wagons drawn by beautiful horses wind their way through the downtown streets and out to the Wies'n, short for festival grounds. While Munich remains the original home for Oktoberfest, La Crosse, Wisconsin has become the home of Oktoberfest, USA.

I went and watched several of the bands at the grounds and went downtown one of the weekends and it wasn't very fun. There were too many people. In fact there were so many that people's cell phones weren't working properly. My cell phone wouldn't send or recieve texts nor send out phone calls!! And it wasn't just me, but my friends were having the same problem. I played this game called Hammerschlaugen one of the nights. Oh my goodness...its a very challengening game. Basicall you have to hit a nail into a piece of wood...with some limited restrictions and a slanted end of a hammer. I was really bad, but my friend April won the pot of money and a prize because she won!! haha! I was happy for her.

I went to the Oktoberfest parade and for the first time i could watch it because I wasn't marching in it! I use to march with the screaming eagles from UWL and I didn't do it this year and i got to watch them and cheer them on! It was super fun and so many people! They say the population in la-x doubles during oktoberfest. However, a very exciting thing happened the week of Oktoberfest!! First my brother was crowned homecoming king from holmen. Second, 3 Former Green Bay Packer players were downtown la-x thursday night! I went out with some friends and we about freaked out! We thought there was no way we were going to get a picture with them, but before the end of the night was over, i had pictures with all 3 of them!! Gilbert Brown, William Henderson, and Santana Daton!! Talk about exciting!! I texted all my friends about it and they were pretty jelous! I guess they were in town for something in Onalaska and decided to come downtown for some drinks!

Haha, anyways, I had a pretty fun Oktoberfest and can't wait till next year!!
