Philosophy - The Viterbo basketball camps are very different from the average basketball camp. The 6:1 camper-instructor ratio makes an intense learning experience the norm. Coach Vandenberg directs the camp, does all the planning and the large group teaching, and oversees the small group teaching. Playing games is not the priority in our camps because our focus is teaching the game to our campers, so they leave more confident in their knowledge and skills! All competitions will follow directly from the skills and techniques taught in camp. In all camps, the players will be grouped according to age and experience to maximize development.
Facilities - The R.W. Beggs, Sr. Gymnasium at the Viterbo Student Activities Center is the site of all women's home basketball games. The 1050 seat gymnasium is equipped with 6 rectangular glass backboards and pro-style break-away rims. The gymnasium's hardwood floor has been tabbed by many as the best floor in La Crosse.
Some of our camps will also use the new Mathy Center. The Mathy Center is a brand new, multi-million dollar
facility, with three basketball courts.
Fee - The fee covers eight to twelve hours of instruction, V-Hawk clothing, and an opportunity to win prizes.
Supervision/Insurance - Participants will be supervised during the instructional sessions by the coaches and camp staff. However, all athletes are expected to carry their own medical insurance and are reminded to show up in the best possible physical condition.
Viterbo will also provide an
excess comprehensive medical insurance plan for
participants. This plan covers all athletic-related
accidents that may incur during instructional sessions
in camp.
Pre-registration - Click here to email Coach Vandenberg to pre-register for camps. Be sure to include your full name, grade in the fall, correct mailing address, phone number, and place "GBB CAMPS" in the subject line of your email.
Shooting Camps (Grades 7-12) Limit: 36 girls
for session two (two sessions available)
The Viterbo Shooting Camp will expose you to Coach V's time tested methods of shooting the basketball. If you learn to follow her formula for shooting success from the footwork to the finish, your shooting percentage will steadily improve! We concentrate on the details of shooting that are so often overlooked. We will also add a few techniques that will make you hard to stop going to the basket. The only thing you will need to add is lots of practice. The camp is so popular that we have included
two sessions to meet the demand.
V-Hawk Skills Camp (Grades 7-9) Limit:
60 girls
The V-Hawk Skills Camp is designed to teach and build on all of the fundamentals of basketball. The girls will be divided according to age and ability so that maximum learning will be achieved in all aspects of the game. Advanced skills such as screening, reading the defense, advanced dribble moves, posting up and skill specific footwork will be taught and emphasized. This camp is for all girls who are serious about improving their skills!
Post Skills Camp (Grades 9-12) Limit: 36 girls
The Post Skills Camp is nine hours of instruction on all aspects of varsity level post play. The topics to be covered will include getting open, securing position, possessing the ball, reading the defense, shooting technique, basic and advanced post moves, rebounding, and defensive position.
We
will also work with the girls on some forgotten
necessities for post players including footwork, core
strength, and eye-hand coordination. You will be given the tools to step up your game in the paint!
Perimeter Skills (Grades 9-12)
This
camp includes nine hours of detailed instruction
specific to perimeter play. This camp is a must for
girls who want to be more of a scoring threat and to
become a defensive “stopper”. The skills we will teach
and emphasize include perimeter shooting, open court
dribbling and passing, techniques for getting open,
moves to attack the basket, reading the defense, using
screens and individual defensive technique. We will
also teach the girls drills to improve agility, balance
and core strength so they have tools to improve their
athleticism at home.
Fundamental Skills Camp (Grades 4-6)
The Fundamental Skills Camp is for young girls that have the desire to learn or improve all of the important basic skills of basketball. This camp is meant to build a foundation of good fundamentals that is so critical for future success in the game. Shooting, passing, catching, ball-handling, cutting, rebounding and individual defense will all be covered and drilled. The camp will culminate with fun competition that incorporates the skills emphasized during the week.
Little Hawks Camp (Grades 1-4)
This camp will focus on teaching the basics of basketball to the youngest of players. We will use eight foot baskets and smaller balls to maximize success and good fundamentals. The teaching and planning will be done by current V-Hawk players, many of whom are elementary education majors. We hope the girls will leave the camp with the excitement to start a long career with this great game.
