PhotoHERMAN SMITH
V-HAWKS MEN'S BASKETBALL 1986-1990

Herman Smith's blue-collar approach to basketball set the precedent for Viterbo College men's basketball. His intensity was unmatched, both on the practice floor and the game floor. The coaching axiom, “guard your opponent as you would hate to be guarded” was the hallmark of Smith's court demeanor.

Smith was also one of the pioneers of the V-Hawk basketball era. He was the model of consistency for a team that won three conference championships in his three year tenure as a V-Hawk starter.

Strong-willed and determined to succeed for teammates, coaches, and fans, “Herm” was the V-Hawks' bread-and-butter player, playing all-out all of the time, and his in-your-face attitude earned him Midwest Catholic Conference All-Conference honors in his final two seasons.

MIKE BOTICKI
V-HAWKS BASKETBALL MANAGER

Mike Boticki is probably best remembered as one of the most ardent supporters of V-Hawk basketball throughout his five years as the manager of the men's basketball team. Dedicated to serving the V-Hawks year-round, Boticki brought energy and excitement to the Student Activities Center as the basketball program blossomed into a perennial conference champion.

Boticki's enthusiasm was contagious. With a towel as his weapon, he brought many a Viterbo crowd to its feet in support of the V-Hawks. What spectators might not have seen was his dedicated work behind the scenes.

Attentive to detail, Boticki was a self-starter who exhibited initiative and ambition in volunteering his services for Viterbo basketball. He always had a listening ear for many of the members of the basketball team, and they frequently confided in him as a counselor and a friend.

DENISE MARTIN
V-HAWKS SOFTBALL 1986-1989

Suffice it to say, Denise Martin was ahead of her time. Those who watched her play witnessed her tremendous athleticism. In a time when wins were hart to manufacture for those first Viterbo softball teams, she was a bright spot for the V-Hawks, earning Midwest Women's Collegiate Conference All-Conference and All-Tournament honors in her final season.

What impressed people the most about Denise Martin was her dedication in the off-season. Always striving to improve and to succeed, Denise Martin embodied the spirit of Viterbo Ahtletic's, and her outstanding work ethic on the field and in the classroom culminated in her being named Viterbo's student-athlete of the year in 1989.
