MARK BOTTERILL
V-HAWKS MEN'S SOCCER 1983-1993
Mark Botterill liked to win and as V-Hawk men's soccer coach, he instilled that same competitive tenacity in each of his players. In 1983, while still in his early 20's, this young native of England was selected to build Viterbo's soccer team from scratch; a job he managed with skill and finesse. He eventually transformed the V-Hawks into one of the most feared and respected small college programs in the nation. Even so, success didn't come easily.
He didn't win a game his first year, but once into his tenure, he rarely lost. Botterill-coached teams compiled a spectacular 115-47-17 record, which included district championships four times in his last five seasons. The V-Hawks advanced to Area V final three times including one trip to the prestigious NAIA National Tournament in 1990. He was named District Coach of the Year three times by his peers.
When he wasn't coaching, Botterill was a one-man public relations firm for the sport in the Coulee Region. His love of soccer was infectious and as far as he was concerned there wasn't enough time in the day to promote it. He founded the Coulee Soccer League and was a leading force in promoting high school soccer in the area. In addition to conducting numerous clinics and camps, he was an active participant in the U.S. Olympic Development Program.
