76ers WOMEN'S BASKETBALL / VOLLEYBALL 1982-1986

Arguably Audrey Schuster was the best all-around women's athlete to grace the court at Viterbo College.

Schuster was a four-year starter for both the volleyball and basketball teams. At 6'0”, she was both a dominant force at the net as a middle-hitter and around the basket as a powerful center.

She was honored often for her athletic prowess, garnering NLCAA All-American awards, perennial All-Conference pick, and a score of All-Tournament trophies.

A student/ athlete who set high standards for both herself and her teammates on the athletic field and in the classroom, Schuster's name in indelibly etched in the school's record books.

76ers MEN'S SOCCER 1982

Jorge Espat became Viterbo College's first ever soccer All-American (National Little College Athletic Association, NLCAA) in 1982. he scored 13 goals and assisted on ten to help the fledgling soccer program achieve respectability and blaze a trail for future championship teams.

Acknowledged as one of the finest players of his time in the small college athletic association, his blinding, dribbling skills and ferocious shots excited fans and terrified opposing goalkeepers.

He is being recognized as a pioneer for the V-Hawks' soccer program, setting high standards not only for athletic excellence but also for the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.

76ers MEN'S BASKETBALL 1979-1983

A powerful and dominant center on the men's basketball team, Todd Butzman was an impressive performer for the 76ers.

As sure-handed a post player as any who donned a 76er uniform, Butzman rarely made a mistake or turned the ball over. A prolific scorer, Butzman's 1,078 points put him among the program's elite basketball players.

An unselfish player who was as comfortable assisting on a basket as making one himself, Butzman was a coach's player. Putting the team first was his ultimate goal, but he earned personal honors with All-Conference selections and national tournament recognition.

76ers / V-HAWKS MERITORIOUS SERVICE 1976 - PRESENT

Marv Friedewald has served Viterbo College since 1976 in the college's business department of which he was founder and chairman.

Friedewald has also been a loyal patron of the college's athletic department, acting as its Faculty Athletic Representative since 1976.

Marv's commitment to the college and its athletic department has been unwavering as is indicated by his missing just four men's home basketball games since 1976. He has been an avid fan of the other sports as well and served as an assistant coach for softball in 1988 and 1989.

76ers MEN'S BASKETBALL 1977-1981

A gentle giant at 6'6” Koenen was an intimidating defensive specialist for the 76er men's basketball team. Off the court, however, Koenen was one of the school's most respected ambassadors.

A member of the program's 1,000 point club, Koenen netted 1,172 points during his four seasons at Viterbo, and was a starter all four years.

A constant name on the Upper Midwest's All-Conference team, Koenen led the 76ers to an NLCAA national championship appearance in 1980.

Known as a coach's player, Koenen was an inspiration to his team, and fellow team members looked to him for leadership in the clutch.

76ers WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 1980-1984

Nicknamed “Fish,” Sherry was an ebullient and infectious point guard for the 76er basketball team.

An unselfish team player, “Fish” loved the game and her excitement rubbed off on her teammates. She was considered one of the best all-around women basketball players on the 76ers' roster. She possessed outstanding vision on the court and handled the ball with consummate ease.

She scored 933 points in her four-year career. She is being recognized for her team play, unselfish performance and for being an outstanding ambassador for both the academic and athletic programs.

76ers MEN'S BASKETBALL 1979 - 1983

Mike Smith was heralded as one of the finest defensive guards ever to wear a 76er basketball jersey.

A tenacious defender and mature leader, Smith led the 76ers to three NLCAA national tournament appearances. He also was a member of the first soccer team.

Regarded as one of the outstanding student / athletes at Viterbo, not only was Mike a highly regarded athlete but he was also a first - class student. Mike consistently made the Dean's list and was awarded the prestigious student leadership award for services to the college.

76ers MEN'S BASKETBALL 1976-1980

Bruce Valk was a tenacious player who ignited a 76er offense that was among the best on the small college scene.

He was a prolific scorer, netting 1,321 points and earning a spot on the 1,000-point club roster of the program's elite basketball players.

Valk had an infectious desire for the game that sparked his ability to play bigger than his 6'2” frame, spearing key rebounds at both the offensive and defensive ends.

He became perimeter shooters to wear a basketball uniform at Viterbo. His jump shot was described as classic form.

76ers / V-HAWKS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL / VOLLEYBALL / SOFTBALL 1985 - 1989

Fittingly, Laurie Johnson carried the torch form the 76er era to the new generation of V-Hawk athletes.

She bridged the past with the present as a tri-sport athlete who played both basketball and volleyball at a very high level. She was also a dedicated and competent student. In fact Laurie Johnson was the first-ever player to win the college's Student / Athlete award which honors excellence both on the playing field and in the classroom.

An agile and speedy setter for the volleyball squad, she was also a fleet-of-foot, deadly perimeter shooter for the basketball team. She was cited for All-Conference honors in both sports.
