Artist's Statement
This body of work, Baggage, visually and metaphorically represents the baggage of life, along with vehicles which can remove it from our lives. Objects used in these narrative pieces are meant to be familiar to provoke the viewer to create their own story. While exploring the concept of baggage, the media which best conveyed the concept for each piece was used. Mixed-media, layered surfaces, multiple meanings, and humor are all tools that have been used to express some potentially explosive psychological baggage.
“Baggage,” what is it? Webster's Dictionary describes baggage as, “A container for things taken on a journey." It also states that baggage may be “superfluous or burdensome practices, regulations, or ideas.” “Baggage,” in this instance, is associated with specific memories from childhood and images of everyday life. The memories can be emotional baggage borrowed from others or else personal. Baggage is construed as negative until it is removed from one's life. The removal leaves a void which in turn may be filled. The outcome depends on what the individual is willing to allow to fill that space.
