Subsequent Meetings
You are asked to meet individually with each of your new advisees sometime within the first three weeks of this semester. The purpose of this meeting is to get to know each of your advisees personally; assess how they are doing academically; review ACT, placement tests, and past academic history (see Advisor's Worksheet Using the ACT); study and learning approaches; career/major choices; connections needed with other campus resources; etc.
Follow up meetings and contacts are encouraged to support your advisee and demonstrate an on-going caring relationship.
Registration is another critical time to meet. Remember these are new students who need to be informed about program requirements; how to read a catalog, course schedule, or degree audit; purpose of General Education; etc. Please take a little time to teach your advisees how to read the degree audit and encourage them to monitor it periodically. Many departments also ask their freshmen to prepare a tentative four-year plan.
