Comprehensive Exam Information

The Viterbo University Master of Arts in Education Comprehensive Examination is designed to provide degree candidates with an opportunity to apply, analyze, synthesize, and reflect on their program courses and demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions acquired. The Viterbo University Graduate Programs in Education Committee feels that this is an essential ingredient in the overall professional development experience and allows you, the student, an opportunity to expand, apply and reflect on the required and elective courses that make-up your Master's Degree program.

Step One: Complete all pre-requisite coursework. Those required courses are:

  • EDUC 600, Philosophical Perspectives
  • EDUC 601, Educational Research I
  • EDUC 603, Mission of Teaching or EDUC 623 (formerly 715), Teacher as a Person and Professional

Step Two: Determine a date that works for you. Please see test dates and registration deadlines.

Step Three: Complete the registration form and send it (along with the $50.00 payment) to the La Crosse office by the designated deadline date. Note, we will not accept phone reservations.

Step Four: Prepare for the exam.  For the on-line exam make sure you set aside two weeks to work on the exam.  You may use your notes, textbooks, and online and other resources.  You will need a computer and printer.

Step Five:  Exams must be printed and mailed to the La Crosse office within two weeks of receiving the exam (note the due dates on the schedule). Each exam question must be printed separately because the five questions are each assessed by different evaluators. A letter will be sent to you indicating the results (pass, rewrite or fail). Exam results will be available in approximately three weeks from your submission date.  In the case of a rewrite, you have two weeks to resubmit the question/s addressing the deficits. In the case of a failed question, you will be given another question on the topic to be submitted within two weeks.

Step Six: Receive a letter indicating the results of your comprehensive exam evaluation. All correspondence for the comprehensive exam should be sent to:

Viterbo University, Graduate Programs in Education, 900 Viterbo Drive, La Crosse, WI  54601
