About the Program and How to Apply:

You are about to read information about one of the most outstanding administrator preparation programs in Iowa.  This two-year, six semester program requires an internship during each of the six semesters.  The internship is conducted onsite with an approved mentor, which is usually the student’s principal.  Ten rigorous, scaffolded courses meet the standards set by the Iowa Department of Education.  As well as the high standards set by Viterbo University.

Each of our instructors is a current or recently retired principal who brings a wealth of experiences to each course.  They design assignments, activities, and readings that address the Iowa Standards for School Leaders (ISSL) in a meaningful and practical manner.  Focused topical speakers may supplement the courses.

There are two tracks for this program:
1) The initial master’s degree
2) The licensure-only track for those individuals who already possess a master’s degree.

The program allows a maximum of nine equivalent transfer credits which are reviewed on an individual case-by-case basis.  Each of these tracks culminates in a PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education license.

  • Beginning in the fall of 2014, Educational Leadership courses will be held in a "blended", Saturdays-only format.
  • Classes will meet face-to-face on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • The rest of the coursework will be managed online through the course Moodle site.

During the student’s final or sixth semester in the program, the student presents an electronic portfolio to a team of evaluators addressing the six standards of the Iowa Standards for School Leaders.  This presentation provides the students the ability to demonstrate to the administrative team the content learned as well as the internship experiences received throughout the program.

Next cohort (June 2014):

Viterbo University Iowa Center will begin a new cohort for its Educational Leadership Program in June of 2014 in West Des Moines.  Additional students will be accepted to join the Burlington cohort at this time as well.

Application deadline extended to June 15, 2014 or until the cohorts are filled.

"Viterbo University provided me with a strong foundation to be a school leader. They established a supportive structure to balance school and work. The teaching faculty was knowledgeable and constantly brought their experiences to the classroom. Viterbo University and their West Des Moines campus were vital in assisting me with personal and professional growth. Thank you."  DW (2011 Graduate)

"I have appreciated the opportunity to better understand leadership roles as I work closely with administrators on a daily basis.  Having a working knowledge of the challenges inherent in current educational policy helps me be more effective in my job as a consultant and allows me to work within the school system to meet the unique learning needs of my students." (2011 Graduate)

"Viterbo offers a great program!  Very practical and I felt like I was getting valuable information out of every class.  All the teachers had real life experiences and stories to share. No busy work to fill the time.  I recommend Viterbo to all who are seeking their principal's license".  (2011 Graduate)

Viterbo University has "purposeful coursework".  Students develop "lots of preparedness through the internships.”  Viterbo’s program helped me to experience the “day to day life of an administrator.” (JH 2013 Grad)

“I loved the cohort model” in the Educational Leadership program at Viterbo. I enjoyed “seeing people grow and change in amazing ways!” There were “amazing instructors who provided examples and had lived it which I appreciated.” (KS 2013 Grad)

“I feel fortunate that I experienced the rigorous standards of the Viterbo Educational Leadership Program.  Other graduate programs may not have given me such diverse internship and classroom opportunities, which would have left me ill-prepared for my current position.  Once again I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunities and experiences I had through the Viterbo program.”  (KF)

THANK YOU for visiting the Viterbo University-Iowa Center Educational Leadership Program web page.  We encourage you to seriously consider this program and become a cohort member of a dynamic and proven administrator preparation program.
