Experience Outside Academia:  Tom has been an attorney since 1989. Before entering higher education, Tom practiced law as a partner in a private law firm (Collins, Quillin & Knothe, Ltd.) and then as chief legal officer in the corporate world. While practicing law, Tom testified before the Insurance and Banking Committee of the Wisconsin Senate and argued four cases before state supreme courts. Tom also ranked first in his class during his third year of law school as a visiting student at the University of San Diego.

Professional Associations:  Tom is a member of the Wisconsin and California state bar associations and many legal and educational associations. 

Community Involvement:  Tom is vice-chair of the City of La Crosse Zoning Board of Appeals and sits of the board of directors of Myrick Hixon EcoPark and Advantage Financial Services.  He also recently finished stints on the board of Rotary East and the La Crosse County Criminal Justice Management Council. 

Research Interests: Tom has written and presented the following papers in the past few years:  Teaching Eminent Domain After Kelo v. City of New London; Copyright’s Fair Use Doctrine in the Digital Age;  Is Your Wellness Plan Legal; Taxation of Graduate Degree Tuition;  Vertical, Non-Price, Restraints:  The Redbox Video Antitrust Litigation. 

Hobbies and Other Interests:  Tom and his wife, Diane, have three children (10, 15, & 17 years old) and most of his free time is spent with his family.  When not chasing the kids around or doing things around the house, Tom still finds time to play a little golf and is an avid reader, especially on the topic of leadership.
