What Makes Us Special

  • In addition to courses in the fundamental areas of sociological theory and research methods, our curriculum has a strong focus on class, race, and gender inequality. Our faculty also offer courses in the Latin American Studies minor, the Women’s Studies minor, and the Gerontology minor, which allow students to cultivate a deeper understanding of diverse populations.
  • During their senior year, our majors complete an original research project on a sociological issue of interest to them. This not only enables students to actively participate in the process of sociological inquiry, but also provides valuable preparation for graduate studies.
  • Our majors are required to participate in community service during two semesters of their undergraduate education. These activities extend learning beyond the classroom and allow students to gain practical experience that they might apply in their future careers.
  • Our department sponsors an annual weekend trip to Chicago. Participants tour various ethnic neighborhoods and observe life in an urban environment. The trip provides an opportunity for students to experience first-hand the rich cultural heritage of different groups in our society.
  • Our department houses a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the national sociology honor society. Students who meet the eligibility requirements are welcome to join and enjoy the benefits of membership in this prestigious organization.
