Singing involves many, many different aspects, such as:  Breathing and Phonation
Breathing is an inhalation that makes the lungs expand which in turn creates a vacuum, then aided by atmospheric pressure, rushes in.  Then to exhale, the lungs contract and push the air out.  The exhalation of the breath rely's on Intrapulmonary pressure, which is the air pressure within the lungs along with the muscles of the rib cage causing the diaphragm to expand and contract.  Breath is the source of life for everyday life and for singing.  Singing requires breath, an active, whole body breath.  The reason being that we need to phonate, or produce sound.  And, the better the breath, the better the phonation process, and sound produced.  Phonation occurs within the body apparatus called the larynx.(click on larynx for more info)During phonation air is pushed through the vocal folds and the vibration of the vocal folds is what produces the sound. Our Larynx, and Vocal Folds are dependent upon the breath that we use, that is why it is so important that we always utilize the air in which we live. Always remember that Breath is the key to a healthy life, and long vocal life.  Click here to review the breathing procedure and watch the breathing process in a short video form.
