Moodle tip of the week:

  1. Spring 2015 classes. Last week I told you that the 2015SP classes would be available today in Moodle. Moodle apparently had other ideas. We ran into a technical error, and after working with our Moodle host to resolve it, the classes are starting to load as I write this. If your course hasn’t shown up by tomorrow, let me know
  2. META courses. Once courses are loaded, we can start working on META classes. If you need sections combined in Moodle, emailcourserequest@viterbo.eduas soon as you know and we can get the process started. We need to know the course prefix, number and section numbers of the classes to be combined. Example: ENGL-101-001 and ENGL-101-002. If you want to know what a META course is or how it can help you, let us know.
  3. Webinar- Forums. Forums, aka Discussions, can be a great tool in both online and face to face classes, but what are the best ways to use them? Come find out at a webinar on Tuesday in the Commons at 10a. Presented by Remote Learner.
  4. Excel 2013. On Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:30-1:20p in the Commons, I will be offering workshops on using Excel 2013. Tuesday we will look at Excel basics, and on Wednesday we will look at tips and tricks at an intermediate level.

Moodle tip of the week:

  1. I moved: I have changed offices and now have a more picturesque view. I am in MC201. From my old office (MC242) head along the corridor between the stacks and the study carrels until just before you run into the wall. Turn left, and there I am. There is a map on the door of 242, which is once again a study room.
  2. How to take a screenshot II. Whether it’s an error message you want to send tocourserequestor a picture for your students, Screenshots often come in handy. All Windows 7 and 8 computers have a program called Snipping Tool. Here’s a great tutorial:How to use the Snipping Tool
  3. Groups and Groupings. Do you want to use groups in your Moodle classes? And what in the world is a grouping and do I need it? Come to the Moodle Webinar: Membership Has Its Privileges: The Power of Groups on Wednesday 12 November from 2-3p in the Commons. Presented by Remote Learner
  4. Discussion Forums:Do you want to know the best ways to use discussions in Moodle? Then theBest Practices: Forums webinar is for you. This one is next week on Tuesday, 18 November 10-11a in the Commons. Presented by Remote Learner
  5. Microsoft Excel 2013 I&II:I will be offering workshops on using the new version of Excel. On Tuesday, 18 November, we will go over the basics, and on Wednesday, 19 November we will cover some intermediate tips to make your Excel life easier. Both sessions run from 1:30-2:30p in the Learning Commons.

Hello Moodlers,

Well, Halloween is over, and we have a trick from Moodle to talk about.

News:

  • How to avoid “The Scroll of Death.”
  • Supercharge your gradebook
  • Advanced Forum view issue

Upcoming Training

All training sessions are in the Learning Commons (2nd floor of the library MC248)

This Thursday’s open session will be in the DSOB Commons.

Tuesday, 04 Nov Basic Course Design 10-11a
Wednesday, 05 Nov Supercharge your Gradebook 10-11a
Thursday, 06 Nov Open Session: 9:30a-12p DSOB Commons
Friday, 07 Nov Open Session: 9:30a-12p

Moodle tip of the week:

  1. Basic Course Design: An effective online course is one that is easy to use, easy to maintain, and easy to look at.  With a few design basics as a guide, we'll help you end the "scroll of death," eliminate software compatibility issues, and avoid the classroom clutter that can turn students off before their first click. Come to the webinar presented by Remote Learner at 10a in the Commons
  2. Supercharge your gradebook: Ready to take your gradebook to the next level?  Whether it be using letter grades, adding extra credit, or importing grades from outside assignments, we'll show you how to get the most out of Moodle's powerful gradebook module. Come to the webinar presented by Remote Learner at 10a in the Commons
  3. Advanced Forum view issue: We have seen an error pop up occasionally in the Advanced Forum. If you get an error message that says “Coding error detected, it must be fixed by a programmer: PHP catchable fatal error” when you try to expand the view of the posts, change the view to “Default”. Please let me know if you do see it; we try to keep track of any issues so they can be patched by moodle.org.
