Viterbo University is pleased to announce that we are now offering a Special Education Cross-categorical certification program with an emphasis in either students with specific learning disabilities or students with cognitive disabilities.  As an option, students may choose to incorporate the 26 credits required for the cross-categorical licensure program as elective coursework for the Master of Arts in Education degree. The licenses will include:

Cross-categorical Special Education (801) with an emphasis in either Learning Disabilities (811) or Cognitive Disabilities (810); students will choose from either Middle Childhood – Early Adolescence (MC-EA), Ages 6 through 12-13 (72) or Early Adolescence – Adolescence (EA-A), Ages 10-21 (73).

The first cohorts will begin Fall 2012.  This program will serve as an add-on license in cross-categorical special education, with an emphasis in either students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) or students with cognitive disabilities (CD), for teachers who are currently licensed to teach in the State of Wisconsin. For a variety of reasons, we see this license to be beneficial for educators who may be asked to take on broader teaching responsibilities within their regular classrooms or for those who may have become displaced in their initial area of licensure.

Viterbo University believes that all students who complete the special education cross-categorical endorsement at Viterbo University will obtain the following outcomes:

  •  Develop pedagogical skills and instructional expertise in their area of choice
  •  Develop communication, collaboration and intervention skills to accomplish their work
  •  Develop professional dispositions of inquiry, collaboration, problem-solving, advocacy and continuous improvement
  •  Develop,  implement,  and interpret accountability and outcome-based systems using assessment data
  •  Connect theory, practice, and research to inform educational decisions and
  •  Foster inclusive learning environments that support diverse learners.
